If you predict that an unscheduled task is going to take 2 minutes, then you should not attempt it when you are within 5 minutes of your next scheduled task. Your prediction may or may not become reality; things often take longer than expected. In addition to that, other unexpected things always appear. Attempting 2-minuteContinue reading “My 2:5 Rule”

Slow & Strong
‘Slow’ does not mean ‘weak’. A freight tanker moves relatively slowly across the ocean … but it will obliterate any tiny speedboat stupid enough to get in its path. As you move through your day, remember that you can crush things without rushing.
Being here, now.
Being here now. It sounds simple, except, as with most simple things, they are powerful, but not easy. When you practice fully ‘being here now’ you get better at it. You won’t always be 100% successful, but that’s not the point. The point is to be as present as you can, more often.
Your Restart Button
Your computers & phones all have a ‘restart’ button. Whenever your hardware or software is lagging or bugging out, it’s best to press this button, especially if you haven’t in awhile, in order to reboot, and start from scratch. This typically clears up 80% of problems. You have a restart button as well. You canContinue reading “Your Restart Button”
The Dakota Sky
Before I left South Dakota last week, early in the morning, I went outside and took final, long, deep breath of the Dakota sky & air. Maybe I’ll go back one day; maybe I won’t. The purpose of that breath was only partially to augment the memory of the trip. You can stop and takeContinue reading “The Dakota Sky”
Fading Thoughts
Thoughts are a little bit like the sound of passing cars. When a car passes by, you hear it lowly, from a distance at first. It gets louder as it approaches, and then it fades away. At some point, you won’t hear the sound of that specific car at all. That car hasn’t disappeared; it’sContinue reading “Fading Thoughts”
Physical Control
Every so often, I like to to a prolonged, rigid sit. This means that for 20 whole minutes, I will sit in a meditative posture, with my spine upright, cross-legged, breathing slowly, not moving a muscle. (To the best of my ability, for the whole time.) Don’t look at the timer, don’t scratch your head,Continue reading “Physical Control”
That Wait
That unexpected 5-10 minute wait you encounter (at the supermarket, store, office, or anywhere) could be a blessing if you treat it as such. You don’t have to spend it doing more emails. You could simply slow down for a few moments, breathe, and get grounded.
Meditating ‘Together’
I typically prefer to meditate before anyone else in my house is up … … but sometimes I like to do it after they’re all awake. In the former case, when it’s all quiet, obviously there are far fewer ‘interruptions’. But in the latter case, when everyone is up, about, and doing their own thingContinue reading “Meditating ‘Together’”
The Unplanned
You never, ever know what the future will bring. It might be according to what you planned for, but it might not. Make sure that part of your plans always include that.
