Jocko Wilink often talks about ‘getting up before the enemy’, meaning, early in the morning. Like 4:30 in the morning.
Of course, Jocko is a former Navy SEAL officer who served in active combat.
My enemies aren’t plotting to advance on my home, enter at gunpoint, and kill me.
But I do have enemies, and I do get up before them.
My enemies are:
- Other people’s agendas
- Laziness and procrastination
- Feeling squeezed by competing commitments and time pressures
- Not getting my workouts & meditation in
- Having to rush cooking or make poor food choices
- Emails
There may be a few more, but, you get the point.
I get up before they do so that I can take care of what I need to take care of, before any of them gain ground.
