Imagine that you are working at your desk while listening to some relaxing classical music, when suddenly a loud jackhammer begins blasting the road right outside your window, making it difficult to hear anything else, and pulling at your concentration.
Now, there are a few ways you might respond to this.
You might feel as if ‘you are trying to work here!’ and that this is a blasphemous interruption of an important state of flow which you were trying to achieve, perhaps even on a deadline.
Or, you might remain the neutral observer of the whole situation, noticing that there is another path. That you could allow all of these feelings to pass, turn off your classical music, and instead choose to listen to the sound of the jackhammer as music while you continued your work.
Not all kinds of music are the same, or exactly what you expect or plan for.
