It’s not so easy to count your breaths for an extended period of time.
After a short while, mentally, you lose focus.
Even when you’re trying really hard, you’re not likely to get too far into the double digits without other thoughts, feelings, or emotions ‘interfering’.
Now, I’ve put the word ‘interfering’ in quotes because this is natural, not really an interference at all.
With practice, you can most certainly strengthen your focus.
And you should.
Just don’t forget that it’s also a choice about how you respond to sensations.
You can choose to call them distractions and annoyances, which leads to anger and frustration.
Or, you can choose to welcome them, and say ‘thank you for the opportunity’.
