Pain, Connection, & Words

I heard this the other day, and thought it was beautiful enough to share, and for us to practice together:

Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates:

At the first gate, ask yourself “Is is true?”

At the second gate ask, “Is it necessary?”

At the third gate ask, “Is it kind?”

Rumi

It makes me wonder, how much pain could be avoided if we did practice this all the time, and conversely, how much connection would be brought forth because of it?
