“Is This Food Good For Me?”

At my day job as an organic food distributor, one of the things I do is evaluate new products.

There are six of us in the room, and, for the most part, all six of us do the same thing first: read the ingredients.

I’ve stated this many times before. It is the #1 rule for making food decisions. It’s worth repeating.

Even I can sometimes ‘get fooled’ by packaging. Not to pick on any particular brand, but, check out this KIND bar that I ate while traveling last week:



Here are the ingredients: Oats, cane sugar, semi-sweet chocolate (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla extract), canola oil, tapioca syrup, brown rice, millet, honey, coconut, buckwheat, amaranth, molasses, brown rice flour, oat flour, gum acacia, quinoa, sea salt, brown rice syrup, vanilla extract, Vitamin E.

I’ve put the sweeteners in bold. It was so sweet that I could barely take more than a few bites.

I’m not averse to a little sugar, but, that wasn’t what I would call ‘kind’.

The packaging doesn’t matter.

What the item is composed of does.
