Sunday Sharing: ‘Cultural Legacies’

I’d like to try and make Sunday a day to share a quote or piece or work from another artist that has influenced me, and perhaps offer a few words on it. Let me know if you like or dislike the plan!

Cultural legacies are powerful forces. They have deep roots and long lives. They persist, generation after generation, virtually intact, even as the economic and social and demographic conditions that spawned them have vanished, and they play such a role in directing attitudes and behavior that we cannot make sense of our world without them. – Malcom Gladwell, Outliers page 174

Even if you never read Gladwell’s book, I’ll share with you today this paragraph which is the one that impacted me the most from Outliers.

How many of your thoughts are your own? How many of your actions are actions that you want to take?

If you really sit down and think about that, the answer can be quite disturbing. Except that, we must confront this reality if we ever want to be ourselves.

Cultural legacies can be positive forces. But if you are ready to stand on your own, and face the world without the cultural explanations you’ve been given, I think that you will find it’s not so scary out there.

  1. Often I allow what others truths r to influence me cultural forces can lead down paths of sadness. I learned to pick and choose what works for me for a happier resistance. Thanks for sharing
